Aquatics Courses
Lifeguard Training
The purpose of this course is to teach lifeguard candidates
the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.
The course content and activities prepare candidates to recognize and
respond quickly and effectively to emergencies, and prevent drowning
and injuries.
Prerequisites:
- Minimum age of 15
- Swim 500 yards continuously, using these strokes
in the following order
- 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing
and a stablizing propellant kick
- 100 yards of breast stroke
- 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing
or breast-stroke. The last 200 yards may be a mixture of front crawl
and breast-stroke.
- Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breast-stroke,
surface dive to a depth of 7-10 ft., retrieve a 10 lb. object, return
to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the
object. When returning to the starting point the participants face
must remain above the water, holding the 10 lb. object with both hands.
Cost of this course: $110.00
Lifeguard Instructor Training
This course will train candidates to teach the recently
updated Lifeguard Training (including first aid) program. This program
includes: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration
for the Professional Rescuer, Preventing Disease Transmission, Community
Water Safety, and Basic Water Rescue.
The training prepares instructor candidates by
developing their understanding of how to use course materials, how to
conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participants' progress.
The Waterfront Instructor course can be added at the
end of this course, if there is interest. The time recquired for training
is 5 hours and includes deep water line rescues, use of the rescue board,
beach drags, and walking assists.
Prerequisites:
- Must be 17 years of age.
- Must pass a written precourse examination with an
80% or better.
- Must successfully perform all of the skills in the
lifeguarding instructor precourse session. The skills include swimming,
lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
- Must successfully complete a Fundamentals for Instructor
training course or be currently certified as an American Red Cross
instructor. This 4 hour class will be scheduled with those needing
it for the first class.
Cost of this course: $150.00
Water Safety Instructor Training
This 36 hour course trains instructor candidates to
teach the Infant and Preschool Aquatic Program, the seven levels of
the Learn to Swim Program, the Basic Water Rescue, and Water Safety
Instructor Aid course.
Prerequisites:
- Must be 17 years of age.
- Must have successfully completed F.I.T.
- Must be able to swim front crawl, backstroke, sidestroke,
and elementary backstroke for 50 yards.
- Must be able to swim butterfly for 10 yards.
- Must be able to perform a standing front dive from
the deck.
- Be able to perform a long, shallow dive into deep
water, surface dive, and retrieve a 10 lb. brick from at least 7 feet
of water and bring it to the surface.
- Be able to perform rescue techniques that include
the following: wading assist, spinal injury procedures, throwing assist,
and a reaching assist.
