Service to the Armed Forces

Service to the Armed Forces (SAF) is an opportunity for the American Red Cross to serve those who serve our Nation. As the United States has reached a decade of fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, the members of our Armed Forces and their families need the Red Cross now more than ever.

Our network spans 700 Red Cross Chapters, as well as Veterans hospitals and military bases worldwide. Through this network, our 7,000 SAF volunteers and staff:

  • Provide services and programs that offer resources for deployed service members and their families
  • Provide emergency communications
  • Support wounded warriors programs
  • Support hospital outreach and veterans programs
  • Support families coping with the stress of deployments

Regardless of where you live within the United States, you can call 877.272.7337 to send an urgent message to a service member 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The American Red Cross will quickly send your emergency communication to deployed service members on behalf of their family. Military members can have peace of mind knowing when they’re out on a mission, in training or stationed far from home without access to cell phones or emails they are still connected to home.

Over 5,000 calls are handled each day and messages are sent all around the world. The Service to Armed Forces provides service to 1.4 million active duty military personnel and their families, as well as more than 1.2 million members of the National Guard and Reserves and their families living in nearly every community in the United States.

“A recent study indicated that Red Cross services reduce

emotional stress in 90% of families served.”
